Worked practice questions

$\displaystyle\int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2} \dfrac{\sin^2 x}{1 + e^x}\, dx = ?$ (Glasser-type)

  1. $\pi/4$
  2. $\pi/2$
  3. $0$
  4. $\pi$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $\pi/4$

Let $I = \int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2} \sin^2 x/(1 + e^x)\, dx$. Sub $x \to -x$: $I = \int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2} \sin^2 x/(1 + e^{-x})\, dx = \int \sin^2 x \cdot e^x/(1 + e^x)\, dx$. **Add:** $2I = \int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2} \sin^2 x\, dx = \pi/2$ (even integrand, area = $2 \cdot \pi/4 = \pi/2$). **So $I = \pi/4$.**

$\displaystyle\int_0^\infty x^3 e^{-x}\, dx = ?$

  1. $3!$
  2. $3$
  3. $e^{-3}$
  4. $\infty$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $3!$

**Gamma:** $\Gamma(n+1) = \int_0^\infty x^n e^{-x}\, dx = n!$. Here $n = 3$: result $= 3! = 6$.

$\displaystyle\int_1^e (\ln x)^2\, dx = ?$

  1. $e - 2$
  2. $e + 2$
  3. $e^2 - 1$
  4. $2e - 1$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $e - 2$

**IBP:** $u = (\ln x)^2$, $dv = dx$. $= [x(\ln x)^2]_1^e - \int_1^e 2\ln x\, dx = e \cdot 1 - 0 - 2[x\ln x - x]_1^e = e - 2[(e - e) - (0 - 1)] = e - 2(1) = e - 2$.
