Worked practice questions

**Cannizzaro's reaction** is given by aldehydes that have

  1. no $\alpha$-hydrogen
  2. two $\alpha$-hydrogens
  3. only aromatic aldehydes
  4. one $\alpha$-hydrogen
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. no $\alpha$-hydrogen

Cannizzaro is the disproportionation pathway taken by aldehydes WITHOUT $\alpha$-H (e.g. HCHO, $C_6H_5CHO$, $(CH_3)_3CCHO$), since they cannot enolise. With $\alpha$-H, aldol dominates.

**Rosenmund's reduction** converts an acyl chloride to an aldehyde using

  1. $H_2/Pd-BaSO_4$ (poisoned)
  2. $LiAlH_4$
  3. $Zn/HCl$
  4. $NaBH_4$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $H_2/Pd-BaSO_4$ (poisoned)

$RCOCl + H_2 \xrightarrow{Pd/BaSO_4} RCHO + HCl$. Catalyst is deliberately poisoned (with quinoline/sulphur) to stop over-reduction to the alcohol.

**Stephen's reduction** converts a nitrile $RCN$ into an aldehyde using

  1. $LiAlH_4$
  2. $Zn-Hg/HCl$
  3. $SnCl_2$ in $HCl$, then $H_2O$
  4. $Na/EtOH$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $SnCl_2$ in $HCl$, then $H_2O$

$RCN + SnCl_2/HCl \to RCH=NH\cdot HCl$ (imine HCl salt), which on hydrolysis gives $RCHO$. Useful when an aldehyde is needed from a 1°-amine precursor.
