Worked practice questions

Resistance R of a conductor is proportional to:

  1. Length only (R ∝ l)
  2. Both length and 1/area (R = ρl/A)
  3. 1/Area only
  4. Only resistivity
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Both length and 1/area (R = ρl/A)

R = ρl/A. So R is directly proportional to length l AND inversely proportional to cross-sectional area A. ρ (resistivity) is the material property.

Two resistors 4 Ω and 12 Ω are in parallel; this combination is in series with 8 Ω. Total resistance:

  1. 20 Ω
  2. 11 Ω
  3. 12 Ω
  4. 8 Ω
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 11 Ω

**Parallel:** (4 × 12)/(4 + 12) = 48/16 = 3 Ω. **Then series with 8:** 3 + 8 = 11 Ω.

Drift velocity v_d is given by:

  1. eEτ/m
  2. eE/m
  3. mE/(eτ)
  4. eE × m × τ
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. eEτ/m

During relaxation time τ, electron accelerates with a = eE/m. We have So v_d = aτ. So So v_d = eEτ/m. Negative direction relative to E (because charge is negative).
