Werner used solution conductivity + AgCl precipitation of Co(III)-chloride-ammonia compounds. For 1 mol of CoCl₃·6NH₃ (yellow), moles of AgCl precipitated by excess AgNO₃ is
A{'text': '3', 'label': 'A'}
B{'text': '1', 'label': 'B'}
C{'text': '2', 'label': 'C'}
D{'text': '0', 'label': 'D'}
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. {'text': '3', 'label': 'A'}
1. In [Co(NH₃)₆]Cl₃ all three chlorides are outside the coordination sphere.
2. They are free (ionisable) in solution and precipitate as AgCl with AgNO₃.
3. Hence 3 mol AgCl per mol of complex.
4. The complex behaves as a 1:3 electrolyte.
