A pipe can fill a tank in 15 hours. Due to a leak at the bottom, it takes 20 hours to fill. If the tank is full, in how much time will the leak empty it?
A20 hours
B32 hours
C40 hours
D60 hours
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. 60 hours
1. Filling rate without leak = 1/15 per hour; effective rate with leak = 1/20 per hour.
2. Leak rate = 1/15 − 1/20 = (4 − 3)/60 = 1/60 per hour.
3. So the leak alone empties the full tank in 60 hours.
