Worked practice questions

The SI unit of acceleration is:

  1. m/s
  2. m/s²
  3. m·s²
  4. kg·m/s
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. m/s²

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with time, so its dimension is [length]/[time]². SI unit: m/s². m/s is velocity. kg·m/s is momentum. m·s² makes no physical sense.

For an object moving with uniform velocity, the velocity-time graph is:

  1. A straight line parallel to the time axis
  2. A straight line passing through the origin with positive slope
  3. A parabola
  4. A straight line passing through the origin with negative slope
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. A straight line parallel to the time axis

Uniform velocity means velocity is constant. On a $v$-$t$ graph, constant $v$ corresponds to a horizontal line at height $v$, parallel to the time axis. Option B (line through origin with positive slope) describes uniform *acceleration* from rest. Option C (parabola) would be a position-time graph for uniform acceleration, not velocity-time.

A car starting from rest accelerates uniformly at $2$ m/s². The distance covered in $5$ seconds is:

  1. $10$ m
  2. $20$ m
  3. $25$ m
  4. $50$ m
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $25$ m

Using $s = u t + \dfrac{1}{2} a t^2$ with $u = 0$, $a = 2$ m/s², $t = 5$ s: $s = 0 + \dfrac{1}{2} \times 2 \times 25 = 25$ m. Alternative: final velocity $v = at = 10$ m/s. Average velocity (from rest at constant acceleration) is $\bar v = \dfrac{0 + 10}{2} = 5$ m/s. Distance $= \bar v \cdot t = 5 \times 5 = 25$ m ✓. Option B (20 m) is the trap if you compute $v \times t = 10 \times 5 / 2.5$ or otherwise mishandle the factor of $\dfrac{1}{2}$.
