Worked practice questions

Inverse of function f exists if and only if f is:

  1. Even
  2. Continuous
  3. Bijective (one-one AND onto)
  4. Linear
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Bijective (one-one AND onto)

f⁻¹ exists iff f is bijection. We have (f⁻¹ ∘ f)(x) = x. So (f⁻¹ ∘ f)(x) = (f ∘ f⁻¹)(y). e.g., f(x) = x³ is bijective; f⁻¹(y) = y^(1/3). f(x) = x² is not.

Composition of functions (g ∘ f)(x) =

  1. g(f(x)) — apply f first, then g
  2. f(x) × g(x)
  3. f(g(x))
  4. Random
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. g(f(x)) — apply f first, then g

(g ∘ f)(x) = g(f(x)). Inner function applied first. **NOT commutative in general:** f ∘ g ≠ g ∘ f.

If A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}, B = {3, 4, 5, 6, 7}, find A ∩ B:

  1. {1,2}
  2. ∅
  3. {3, 4, 5}
  4. {3, 4, 5}
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. {3, 4, 5}

Intersection = common elements = {3, 4, 5}. n(A ∩ B) = 3. By inclusion-exclusion: n(A ∪ B) = 5 + 5 - 3 = 7.
