Worked practice questions

Among $\mathrm{Sc^{3+}}$, $\mathrm{Ti^{4+}}$, $\mathrm{V^{2+}}$ and $\mathrm{Zn^{2+}}$, which is **coloured** in aqueous solution?

  1. $\mathrm{Sc^{3+}}$
  2. $\mathrm{Ti^{4+}}$
  3. $\mathrm{V^{2+}}$
  4. $\mathrm{Zn^{2+}}$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $\mathrm{V^{2+}}$

Colour in transition-metal aquo ions comes from $d$-$d$ transitions, which require partially-filled $d$-orbitals. $\mathrm{Sc^{3+}}$ ($d^0$), $\mathrm{Ti^{4+}}$ ($d^0$) and $\mathrm{Zn^{2+}}$ ($d^{10}$) all have either empty or completely filled d-shells, so they are colourless. $\mathrm{V^{2+}}$ is $d^3$, giving a violet colour in solution.

d-block elements have differentiating electrons in:

  1. p-orbital
  2. d-orbital (groups 3-12)
  3. s-orbital
  4. f-orbital
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. d-orbital (groups 3-12)

d-block: groups 3-12. d-electron is the differentiating one. Includes Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, ..., Cu, Zn, etc. Transition metals (technically d¹-d⁹, so Sc-Cu).

K₂Cr₂O₇ (potassium dichromate) is a strong:

  1. Reductant
  2. Reducing agent
  3. Catalyst
  4. Oxidizing agent (Cr goes from +6 to +3)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. Oxidizing agent (Cr goes from +6 to +3)

**In acidic medium:** Cr₂O₇²⁻ + 14 H⁺ + 6 e⁻ → 2 Cr³⁺ + 7 H₂O (E° = +1.33 V). Strong oxidizer. Orange-red color. Used in volumetric analysis and tanning. KMnO₄ even stronger oxidizer.
