Worked practice questions

The vapour pressure of water is the pressure exerted by water vapour under which condition?

  1. In equilibrium with liquid water
  2. When all the liquid has boiled off
  3. When the container is fully open
  4. At the moment the water freezes
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. In equilibrium with liquid water

1. Liquid water always has some vapour above it, because molecules keep leaving the surface. 2. In a closed container the vapour builds up until molecules return as fast as they leave. 3. The pressure of the vapour at that balance point is the vapour pressure of water. 4. It depends on temperature alone, rising steadily as the water gets hotter. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 9 "Gases", section 9.3 Stoichiometry of Gaseous Substances, Mixtures, and Reactions_

For gases measured at the same temperature and pressure, reacting volume ratios are given by what?

  1. The molar masses of the gases
  2. The densities of the gases
  3. The ratio of their pressures
  4. The coefficients in the equation
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. The coefficients in the equation

1. Equal volumes of ideal gases at matched temperature and pressure hold equal numbers of molecules. 2. A balanced equation counts molecules, so those same numbers apply directly to volumes. 3. The reacting volume ratios are therefore just the balancing coefficients. 4. For nitrogen plus three hydrogen giving two ammonia, one volume of nitrogen takes three volumes of hydrogen and yields two volumes of ammonia. 5. This shortcut only works while every volume is measured at the same temperature and pressure. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 9 "Gases", section 9.3 Stoichiometry of Gaseous Substances, Mixtures, and Reactions_

Propane burns as C3H8 + 5 O2 gives 3 CO2 + 4 H2O. What volume of oxygen at the same conditions reacts with 2.7 L of propane?

  1. 5.4 L of oxygen
  2. 13.5 L of oxygen
  3. 8.1 L of oxygen
  4. 0.54 L of oxygen
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 13.5 L of oxygen

1. Both gases are measured at the same temperature and pressure, so volumes stand in for moles. 2. The balanced equation shows one propane to five oxygen. 3. So one volume of propane needs five volumes of oxygen. 4. Multiply: 2.7 L x 5 = 13.5 L of oxygen. 5. The coefficient 3 belongs to carbon dioxide, so answering 8.1 L means reading the product side by mistake. 6. No ideal gas calculation is needed here, because the shared conditions cancel out of the ratio. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 9 "Gases", section 9.3 Stoichiometry of Gaseous Substances, Mixtures, and Reactions_
