Which value of R is used in the equation for the average kinetic energy of a mole of gas?
A0.08206 L atm/mol K
B62.36 L torr/mol K
C101.325 kPa/mol
D8.314 J/mol K
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. 8.314 J/mol K
1. The average kinetic energy of a mole of gas is three halves of R times the kelvin temperature.
2. Kinetic energy is measured in joules, so R must supply joules per mole per kelvin.
3. That form of the constant is 8.314 J/mol K, which is the same as 8.314 kg m squared per second squared per mol per K.
4. The value 0.08206 carries litre atmospheres and belongs in PV = nRT with pressure in atm, so using it here would leave the energy in the wrong units.
