Worked practice questions

Glycerol (propane-1,2,3-triol) is classified as:

  1. Trihydric alcohol — three -OH groups (on C1, C2, C3)
  2. Dihydric alcohol
  3. Phenol
  4. Monohydric alcohol
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Trihydric alcohol — three -OH groups (on C1, C2, C3)

Glycerol = **propane-1,2,3-triol** = CH₂(OH)-CH(OH)-CH₂(OH). **Three -OH groups → trihydric alcohol**. Used in soaps, cosmetics, and as a humectant. Ethylene glycol is dihydric; ethanol is monohydric.

Reduction of a ketone (R₂C=O) with NaBH₄ or LiAlH₄ produces:

  1. A tertiary alcohol
  2. A primary alcohol
  3. A ketone (no change)
  4. A secondary alcohol (R₂CH-OH)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. A secondary alcohol (R₂CH-OH)

**Aldehyde → 1° alcohol**; **ketone → 2° alcohol**. NaBH₄ and LiAlH₄ deliver hydride (H⁻) to the carbonyl carbon. LiAlH₄ is stronger (reduces esters, carboxylic acids too) NaBH₄ is milder (only aldehydes and ketones, not acids/esters).

A Grignard reagent R-MgX reacts with **methanal (HCHO)** to produce, after hydrolysis:

  1. A secondary alcohol
  2. A ketone
  3. A tertiary alcohol
  4. A primary alcohol (R-CH₂-OH)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. A primary alcohol (R-CH₂-OH)

**HCHO + RMgX → R-CH₂-OMgX → (H₂O) → R-CH₂-OH** (primary alcohol). **General rule:** **HCHO → 1° alcohol; other RCHO → 2° alcohol; ketone → 3° alcohol**. Powerful C-C bond-forming reaction.
