Worked practice questions

Intensity at point in YDSE with phase difference φ between two waves of equal amplitude:

  1. I_max
  2. I × sin φ
  3. I = 4 I₀ cos²(φ/2)
  4. I_max + I_min
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. I = 4 I₀ cos²(φ/2)

**With two equal-amplitude waves:** I = 4 I₀ cos²(φ/2). At φ = 0 (constructive): I = 4 I₀. At φ = π (destructive): I = 0. Time-averaged intensity over the pattern is 2 I₀ (energy conservation).

For single-slit diffraction of width a, angular position of m-th minimum:

  1. sin θ_m = m × 2λ/a
  2. No formula
  3. sin θ_m = (m + 1/2) λ / a
  4. sin θ_m = m λ / a
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. sin θ_m = m λ / a

**Single-slit minima:** a sin θ = m λ (m = ±1, ±2, ...). Note this is opposite of YDSE (which has bright at m λ) single slit has dark at m λ because of within-slit destructive interference.

Resolving power of diffraction grating with N lines:

  1. Independent of N
  2. 1
  3. N²
  4. Nm (where m = order of diffraction) — Rayleigh criterion
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. Nm (where m = order of diffraction) — Rayleigh criterion

R = λ/Δλ = Nm. More lines (or higher order) means finer resolution. Used in spectrometers to separate close spectral lines (e.g., sodium D-line doublet).
