A star is described as four light years away. What does that measurement give?

  1. How long the star has lived
  2. How far away the star is
  3. How old the starlight is
  4. How bright the star looks
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. How far away the star is

1. Distances between stars are far too large for kilometres to be convenient. 2. Astronomers therefore use units built on the speed of light. 3. A light year is the distance that light travels in one year. 4. Even though a length of time appears in the name, the measurement is a distance. 5. So four light years tells us how far away the star is. 6. It does not tell us the age of the star or how bright it appears. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 8 (CC BY 4.0), Light years, light hours and light minutes_
