What is one clear difference between evaporation and boiling?

  1. Evaporation happens at any temperature
  2. Evaporation happens only in cold places
  3. Evaporation happens without any energy
  4. Evaporation happens deep inside a liquid
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Evaporation happens at any temperature

1. Boiling starts only once a liquid reaches one particular temperature. 2. Evaporation goes on at all temperatures, which is why wet clothes dry in the shade. 3. Evaporation also happens only at the surface, while boiling happens right through. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 8 (CC BY 4.0), Melting and evaporation_

Drops of water appear on the outside of a cold glass. What has the water vapour in the air done?

  1. It has warmed and turned into a liquid
  2. It has cooled and turned into a liquid
  3. It has cooled and turned into a solid
  4. It has warmed and turned into a gas
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. It has cooled and turned into a liquid

1. The air around the glass carries invisible water vapour. 2. The cold glass takes energy away from the vapour particles touching it. 3. With less energy those particles slow down. 4. Slower particles feel the forces of attraction between them and pull together. 5. They join into tiny droplets of liquid water, and this change is condensation. 6. Warming would do the opposite and keep the water as vapour. 7. Turning into a solid would need cooling much further, all the way to freezing. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 8 (CC BY 4.0), Condensation and solidifying_

Order the stages of heating a solid

Read exercise and reference answers
Steps
  1. Particles vibrate
  2. Vibration grows
  3. The solid melts
  4. The liquid heats
  5. The liquid boils
Instructions
Tap the five stages in order, from a cold solid to a spreading gas, as energy is added.
