Wind gusts create ripples on the ocean with a wavelength of 5.00 cm that travel at 2.00 m/s. What is their frequency?
A0.100 Hz
B2.50 Hz
C40.0 Hz
D10.0 Hz
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. 40.0 Hz
1. Wave speed, frequency and wavelength are linked by v_w = f x wavelength.
2. Rearranging gives f = v_w / wavelength.
3. Convert the wavelength: 5.00 cm = 0.0500 m.
4. f = 2.00 m/s divided by 0.0500 m = 40.0 Hz.
5. Leaving the wavelength in centimetres gives 0.400 Hz, a hundred times too small.
6. Multiplying speed by wavelength instead of dividing gives 0.100, which is the trap in one option.
