Which pair of quantities are the only ones that set the period and frequency of a simple harmonic oscillator?
AThe amplitude and the force constant
BThe mass and the amplitude of motion
CThe amplitude and the maximum speed
DThe mass and the force constant
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. The mass and the force constant
1. The period of a simple harmonic oscillator is T = 2 pi sqrt(m/k).
2. Only the mass m and the force constant k appear in that expression.
3. Amplitude does not appear anywhere in it, so it cannot change the period or the frequency.
4. Maximum speed is itself a result of amplitude, mass and force constant, so it is not an independent cause.
5. Every option pairing amplitude with something else therefore fails on the same point.
