That 500 A flows through transmission lines of total resistance 1.00 ohm. What power is dissipated in the lines?
A125 kW
B250 kW
C500 kW
D1.00 MW
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 250 kW
1. Loss in a line of known resistance carrying a known current is P = I squared R.
2. Square the current: (500 A) squared = 250000 A squared.
3. Multiply by the line resistance: P = (250000 A squared)(1.00 ohm) = 250000 W.
4. In convenient units that is 250 kW.
5. Compared with the 100 MW being carried, that is a loss of 0.250 percent.
6. 500 kW would follow from using P = I V with the line resistance mistaken for a voltage.
7. 125 kW halves the correct figure and would follow from squaring 250 A rather than 500 A.
