The QRS complex of an electrocardiogram is generated by which event?

ARepolarization of the atria
BDepolarization of the atria
CDepolarization of the ventricles
DRepolarization of the ventricles
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Depolarization of the ventricles
1. The P wave comes first and is the depolarization and contraction of the atria. 2. The QRS complex follows and is the depolarization of the ventricles as they pump blood onward. 3. Its jagged shape and time span come from the irregular shape of the heart and the path of the wave. 4. Repolarization of the atria happens at the same moment but is masked by the much larger QRS signal. 5. Systolic pressure peaks shortly after the QRS complex, since that is when the ventricles contract. _Source: OpenStax College Physics (CC BY 4.0), Ch 20 "Electric Current, Resistance, and Ohm's Law", section Electrocardiograms_
