Which sequence correctly orders the handling of a protein inside the cell?
ARibosome, ER, Golgi, vesicle
BLysosome, Golgi, vesicle, ER
CRibosome, Golgi, ER, vesicle
DVesicle, ribosome, ER, Golgi
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. Ribosome, ER, Golgi, vesicle
1. A protein is first synthesized on a ribosome.
2. Ribosomes on the rough ER pass the new chain into the ER lumen for structural modification.
3. Transport vesicles then carry it from the ER to the cis face of the Golgi.
4. Inside the Golgi it is modified further and then tagged so it can be routed.
5. Finally it is packaged into secretory vesicles that bud from the trans face for distribution.
6. Any order placing the Golgi before the ER reverses the direction of that traffic.
7. Any order that begins at the lysosome is wrong because lysosomes are themselves products of this pathway.
8. The order is ribosome, ER, Golgi, vesicle.
