How does the pH inside a lysosome compare with the pH of the cytoplasm?
AIt is more acidic than the cytoplasm
BIt is more alkaline than the cytosol
CIt matches the cytoplasm exactly
DIt shifts between acid and alkali
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. It is more acidic than the cytoplasm
1. Lysosomal enzymes break down proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, nucleic acids and worn-out organelles.
2. Those enzymes are active at a much lower pH than that of the cytoplasm.
3. The interior of the lysosome must therefore be more acidic than the cytoplasm.
4. Many reactions of the cytoplasm could not occur at that low pH, which is exactly why the acid is kept compartmentalized.
5. Lysosomal pH is more acidic.
