What is assembled in the nucleolus?
AThe subunits of the ribosomes
BThe strands of the cytoskeleton
CThe enzymes of the lysosomes
DThe proteins of the cell wall
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. The subunits of the ribosomes
1. Some chromosomes carry sections of DNA that encode ribosomal RNA.
2. The nucleolus is a darkly staining area within the nucleus where that RNA collects.
3. There it aggregates with associated proteins to assemble the ribosomal subunits.
4. Those subunits then leave through the pores in the nuclear envelope for the cytoplasm.
5. The nucleolus assembles ribosomal subunits.
