What is the pH of a sulphuric acid solution that is 5 x 10^-5 mol per litre in concentration? (H2SO4 gives two H+ ions per molecule.)
A4
B3
C5
D9
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. 4
1. Each mole of H2SO4 gives 2 moles of H+ ions on full dissociation.
2. So [H+] = 2 x (5 x 10^-5) = 10 x 10^-5 = 1.0 x 10^-4 mol per litre.
3. pH = -log10[H+] = -log10(10^-4) = -(-4) = 4.
4. Therefore pH = 4; forgetting the factor of 2 would wrongly give a higher pH near 5.
