Mechanical Properties of Fluids: quick revision

Distinguish fluid pressure from the force it exerts on an area. Hydrostatic pressure varies with depth. For steady incompressible flow, continuity relates area to speed; Bernoulli’s equation also requires negligible viscosity along a streamline.

Key ideas and when to use them

  • Gauge pressure at depth h: $p=\rho gh$.
  • Continuity: $A_1v_1=A_2v_2$.
  • Buoyant force: $F_b=\rho_{\rm fluid}gV_{\rm displaced}$.

Common mistakes

  • Add atmospheric pressure only when absolute pressure is requested.
  • Use displaced fluid volume and fluid density in the buoyancy equation.

Three worked examples

Example 1: Find the gauge pressure 3 m below water’s surface. Use ρ = 1000 kg/m³ and g = 10 m/s².
  1. Hydrostatic gauge pressure excludes atmospheric pressure.
  2. $p=1000\times10\times3$.

30000 Pa

Example 2: An incompressible fluid flows at 2 m/s through area 4 cm². Find its speed where the area is 2 cm².
  1. Use $v_2=A_1v_1/A_2$; the equal area units cancel.
  2. $v_2=4\times2/2$.

4 m/s

Example 3: An immersed body displaces 2 × 10⁻³ m³ of water. Find the buoyant force using ρ = 1000 kg/m³ and g = 10 m/s².
  1. Apply the weight of the displaced water.
  2. $F_b=1000\times10\times2\times10^{-3}$.
