Worked practice questions

Fine clay is stirred into water and the water turns cloudy. What kind of mixture is this?

  1. A suspension
  2. A solution
  3. An element
  4. A compound
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. A suspension

1. Cloudiness is the clue, because it shows that separate clumps are present. 2. The clay particles never dissolve, they stay spread through the water in clumps. 3. Those clumps block light, which is why the water looks cloudy and opaque. 4. A mixture of this kind is called a suspension. 5. A solution would look clear, because its particles spread out one by one. 6. Sugar stirred into water gives a solution, so that is the trap in this question. 7. Elements and compounds are pure substances and are not mixtures at all. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 7 (CC BY 4.0), A mixture of a solid and a liquid_

What is the air that we breathe?

  1. A single pure gas
  2. A liquid solution
  3. A mixture of gases
  4. A solid compound
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. A mixture of gases

1. Gas particles are far apart, so gases mix into each other very easily. 2. Air is not one gas but several mixed together. 3. Nitrogen and oxygen are the two largest parts of that mixture. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 7 (CC BY 4.0), A mixture of a gas and a gas_
