Worked practice questions

A metal spoon is left standing in a hot drink and the handle becomes warm. Which process is this?

  1. Conduction
  2. Convection
  3. Radiation
  4. Evaporation
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Conduction

1. The particles at the hot end of the spoon gain energy and vibrate faster. 2. They bump into neighbouring particles and pass some energy along. 3. Energy travels along the spoon this way until the handle warms up. 4. This kind of transfer through a touching material is called conduction. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 7 (CC BY 4.0), Conduction_

Why does warm water rise above cold water in a pot on a stove?

  1. It is more dense than cold water
  2. It has more mass than cold water
  3. It is less dense than cold water
  4. It has less mass than cold water
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. It is less dense than cold water

1. The stove heats only the water touching the bottom of the pot. 2. Heating makes the particles in that water move faster. 3. The faster particles push further apart, so that water takes up more space. 4. The same particles now fill a larger space, so the warm water is less dense. 5. Anything less dense floats above what is denser, so the warm water rises. 6. Cooler, denser water sinks to take its place and is heated in turn. 7. This circling movement is called a convection current, and it warms the whole pot. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 7 (CC BY 4.0), Convection_

How does energy from the Sun reach the Earth across empty space?

  1. By conduction
  2. By radiation
  3. By convection
  4. By insulation
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. By radiation

1. Conduction needs two things to be touching each other. 2. Convection needs a liquid or gas that can move around. 3. There is neither between the Sun and the Earth, only empty space. 4. Energy still crosses it by radiation, which needs no material at all. _Source: Siyavula Natural Sciences Grade 7 (CC BY 4.0), Radiation_
