Worked practice questions

The modern periodic law states that the physical and chemical properties of elements are periodic functions of:

  1. Atomic mass
  2. Atomic radius
  3. Atomic number
  4. Number of neutrons
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Atomic number

Modern (Moseley's) periodic law: properties of elements are periodic functions of their **atomic number** ($Z$). This replaced Mendeleev's original law which was based on atomic mass. Why atomic number wins: it explains chemistry better (electronic structure follows $Z$, not mass) and resolves Mendeleev's anomalies (the Ar/K and Te/I pairs whose mass-order disagrees with chemistry-order).

As per your syllabus, in IUPAC systematic nomenclature for Z > 100, what are the digit roots for 1, 2 and 0 respectively?

  1. un (u), bi (b), nil (n)
  2. mono (m), di (d), null (nl)
  3. ek (e), do (d), shun (s)
  4. one (o), two (t), zero (z)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. un (u), bi (b), nil (n)

As per your syllabus, 0=nil(n), 1=un(u), 2=bi(b), …, 9=enn(e). Suffix '-ium' added.

In Valence Bond Theory, an octahedral LOW-SPIN complex like [Co(NH3)6]³⁺ uses which hybridisation?

  1. sp³d² (outer orbital, high spin)
  2. dsp² (square planar)
  3. d²sp³ (inner orbital, low spin)
  4. sp³ (tetrahedral)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. d²sp³ (inner orbital, low spin)

Low-spin octahedral = d²sp³ (uses 3d² + 4s + 4p³ orbitals; INNER ORBITAL complex). High-spin octahedral = sp³d² (uses 4s + 4p³ + 4d²; outer orbital). dsp² is square planar (Ni²⁺ in 4-coordinate).
