Worked practice questions

The modern periodic law states that the physical and chemical properties of elements are periodic functions of:

  1. Atomic mass
  2. Atomic radius
  3. Atomic number
  4. Number of neutrons
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Atomic number

Modern (Moseley's) periodic law: properties of elements are periodic functions of their **atomic number** ($Z$). This replaced Mendeleev's original law which was based on atomic mass. Why atomic number wins: it explains chemistry better (electronic structure follows $Z$, not mass) and resolves Mendeleev's anomalies (the Ar/K and Te/I pairs whose mass-order disagrees with chemistry-order).

As per your syllabus, reduction of an alkyne to a TRANS alkene uses which reagent system?

  1. Aqueous H₂SO₄
  2. Lindlar's catalyst
  3. Sodium in liquid ammonia
  4. H₂ / Pt at high pressure
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Sodium in liquid ammonia

Your syllabus: Na/liq NH₃ gives trans alkene (via single-electron addition + vinyl radical inversion). Lindlar gives cis.

Mendeleev arranged elements primarily in order of:

  1. Atomic mass
  2. Atomic number
  3. Atomic radius
  4. Density
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Atomic mass

1. Mendeleev's periodic table predates the modern one. 2. He used the increasing atomic masses of the elements he knew. 3. He left gaps for undiscovered elements (eka-aluminium, eka-silicon, etc.). 4. Atomic number became the basis only after Moseley. 5. So the original Mendeleev arrangement used atomic mass. _Source: syllabus Science Ch 5 'Periodic Classification of Elements'_
