Worked practice questions

For the reaction N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3, increasing pressure favours:

  1. Forward (fewer moles on RHS)
  2. Random direction
  3. No effect
  4. Reverse
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Forward (fewer moles on RHS)

Reactants have 4 moles of gas (1 N2 + 3 H2), products have 2 moles (2 NH3). Increasing pressure shifts equilibrium toward fewer moles, hence toward products. This is the basis of Haber's process.

A weak base BOH has Kb = 1.8 × 10⁻⁵. pH of 0.1 M solution is approximately:

  1. 9
  2. 11
  3. 3
  4. 8
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 11

[OH-] ≈ √(Kb × C) = √(1.8 × 10⁻⁶) ≈ 1.34 × 10⁻³. pOH = -log(1.34 × 10⁻³) ≈ 2.87. pH = 14 - 2.87 ≈ 11.13.

For the reaction H2(g) + I2(g) ⇌ 2HI(g) with Kc = 50 at 800 K, if [H2] = [I2] = 0.01 M initially, equilibrium [HI]:

  1. 0.020
  2. 0.005
  3. 0.014
  4. 0.010
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 0.014

Let x = HI formed. Then [H2] = [I2] = 0.01 - x/2. Kc = x²/((0.01-x/2)²) = 50. So x/(0.01-x/2) = √50 ≈ 7.07. x ≈ 7.07(0.01 - x/2) = 0.0707 - 3.535x. 4.535x = 0.0707, x ≈ 0.0156. Approximate [HI] ≈ 0.014 M.
