Worked practice questions

The escape velocity from the Earth's surface is approximately ($R = 6.4 \times 10^6$ m, $g = 9.8$ m/s²):

  1. $7.9$ km/s
  2. $11.2$ km/s
  3. $20$ km/s
  4. $1000$ m/s
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $11.2$ km/s

Escape velocity from Earth's surface: $v_e = \sqrt{2gR}$ (using the surface relation $GM/R^2 = g$). $v_e = \sqrt{2 \times 9.8 \times 6.4 \times 10^6} = \sqrt{1.25 \times 10^8} \approx 1.12 \times 10^4$ m/s $= 11.2$ km/s. Option A ($7.9$ km/s) is the *orbital* velocity at Earth's surface, smaller by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. That trap is identical to the one in the orbital-velocity question.

For resistors in PARALLEL, the equivalent resistance is given by:

  1. R₁ − R₂
  2. R₁ × R₂
  3. 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ...
  4. R₁ + R₂
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ...

**For parallel:** voltage is same across each, currents add. 1/R_eq = Σ(1/Rᵢ). Equivalent is always LESS than any individual.

Three cells of emf 2 V each, internal resistance 0.5 Ω each, are connected in series. Total emf and internal resistance:

  1. E = 6V, r = 0.5 Ω
  2. E = 6V, r = 1.5 Ω
  3. E = 2V, r = 1.5 Ω
  4. E = 6V, r = 1/6 Ω
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. E = 6V, r = 1.5 Ω

**In series:** E_eq = E₁ + E₂ + E₃ = 6V. We have r_eq = r₁ + r₂ + r₃. So r_eq = 1.5 Ω. (Series adds both emf and internal resistance.)
