Worked practice questions

Among $1$-butanol, $2$-butanol and $tert$-butanol, the order of reactivity in the Lucas test is

  1. 3° > 2° > 1°
  2. All equal
  3. 1° > 2° > 3°
  4. 2° > 3° > 1°
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 3° > 2° > 1°

Lucas test forms a carbocation intermediate. Stability is 3° > 2° > 1° → reactivity follows the same order. $tert$-butanol is cloudy immediately 1-butanol won't react at room temperature.
