Worked practice questions

When the human arm is bent, the state of the upper arm muscles is that:

  1. both biceps and triceps relax together
  2. triceps contract while biceps relax
  3. biceps contract while triceps relax
  4. both biceps and triceps contract together
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. biceps contract while triceps relax

1. The biceps and triceps lie in the upper arm and work as an antagonistic pair. 2. Antagonistic means they oppose one another, so when one contracts the other must relax. 3. Bending the arm requires the biceps to contract, pulling the forearm upwards. 4. The triceps therefore relaxes at the same moment. 5. Because they are a pair, the two can never both contract or both relax, which rules out the last two options. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2022 Biology 033, Question 1: Multiple Choice Items, item (ix)_

Straightening the arm after it has been bent requires the:

  1. biceps to contract and the triceps to relax
  2. triceps to contract and the biceps to relax
  3. biceps and the triceps both to contract
  4. biceps and the triceps both to relax
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. triceps to contract and the biceps to relax

1. Bending and straightening are opposite movements, so they need the opposite muscle states. 2. Bending the arm contracts the biceps and relaxes the triceps. 3. Straightening therefore reverses that: the triceps contracts and the biceps relaxes. 4. The contracting triceps pulls the forearm back down into line. 5. As an antagonistic pair, they cannot both contract or both relax at once. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2022 Biology 033, Question 1: Multiple Choice Items, item (ix)_
