Worked practice questions

A cyclist loses a lot of water through sweating. Which organ is responsible for that loss?

  1. The stomach
  2. The kidney
  3. The skin
  4. The liver
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. The skin

1. Sweat is produced by sweat glands, which are tiny coiled tubules in the skin. 2. They secrete excess water and release it through pores onto the skin surface, where it evaporates. 3. The kidney also removes excess water, but as urine together with urea, not as sweat. 4. The liver excretes bile pigment from the breakdown of haemoglobin, and the lungs release carbon dioxide with water vapour. 5. The stomach is not an excretory organ at all — it stores food temporarily. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2022 Biology 033, Question 1: Multiple Choice Items, item (iii)_

The liver acts as an excretory organ by removing:

  1. urea dissolved in excess water
  2. excess water through open pores
  3. carbon dioxide with water vapour
  4. bile pigment from haemoglobin breakdown
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. bile pigment from haemoglobin breakdown

1. Each excretory organ removes a characteristic waste product. 2. The liver breaks down worn-out haemoglobin, and the pigment left over is excreted in bile. 3. Urea dissolved in water is excreted by the kidney as urine. 4. Carbon dioxide together with water vapour leaves through the lungs. 5. Water leaving through pores is sweat from the skin, so each of the other three belongs to a different organ. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2022 Biology 033, Question 1: Multiple Choice Items, item (iii)_
