Worked practice questions

You need to enlarge a leaf specimen at the lab bench. Which pair of apparatus will do it?

  1. Microscope and hand lens
  2. Microscope and watch glass
  3. Hand lens and petri dish
  4. Measuring cylinder and beaker
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Microscope and hand lens

1. Only two pieces of laboratory apparatus magnify: the microscope and the hand lens. 2. The hand lens gives modest magnification in the field; the microscope gives far more at the bench. 3. A petri dish grows microorganisms or holds specimens, so it magnifies nothing. 4. A watch glass serves as an evaporating surface or a cover for a beaker. 5. A measuring cylinder measures the volume of liquids and a beaker mixes or measures them, so that pair is unrelated to magnifying. _Source: NECTA CSEE 2021 Biology 033, Question 1: Multiple Choice, item (ii)_
