Worked practice questions

Mutual inductance $M$ between two coils satisfies:

  1. $M_{12} \ne M_{21}$ always
  2. $M_{12} = M_{21}$ by symmetry
  3. $M_{12} = M_{21}^2$
  4. $M_{12} = -M_{21}$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $M_{12} = M_{21}$ by symmetry

By the symmetry of the mutual-inductance integral (Neumann formula), $M_{12} = M_{21} \equiv M$. **So you can compute it whichever way is easier — flux in coil 2 per unit current in coil 1, or vice versa.**

If the current in a primary coil changes at 30 A/s and induces 0.6 V in a secondary coil, the mutual inductance is:

  1. 0.02 H
  2. 0.05 H
  3. 2.0 H
  4. 0.2 H
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 0.02 H

We have $|e_2| = M \cdot |dI_1/dt|$ ⇒ $M = 0.6/30 = 0.02$. So H = 20 mH.
