Worked practice questions

If cot x = -5/12 and x lies in the SECOND quadrant, then sin x equals:

  1. -5/13
  2. 12/13
  3. 5/13
  4. -12/13
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 12/13

cot x = cos x / sin x = -5/12. Using 1 + cot²x = cosec²x: cosec²x = 1 + 25/144 = 169/144 → cosec x = ±13/12. In Quadrant II, sin x > 0 so cosec x > 0 We have → cosec x = 13/12 → sin. So x = 12/13.

In which quadrant is tan x POSITIVE while sin x is NEGATIVE?

  1. I
  2. III
  3. II
  4. IV
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. III

**Quadrant signs:** I (all +), II (sin/cosec +), III (tan/cot +), IV (cos/sec +). Quadrant III has both sin and cos negative → sin x < 0 and tan x = sin/cos > 0.

The DOMAIN of y = tan x is:

  1. {x ∈ ℝ : -1 ≤ x ≤ 1}
  2. All real numbers
  3. {x ∈ ℝ : x ≠ (2n+1)π/2, n ∈ ℤ}
  4. {x ∈ ℝ : x ≠ nπ, n ∈ ℤ}
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. {x ∈ ℝ : x ≠ (2n+1)π/2, n ∈ ℤ}

tan x = sin x / cos x is undefined where cos x = 0, i.e. at x = (2n+1)π/2. Hence domain = ℝ \ {(2n+1)π/2 : n ∈ ℤ}. Range of tan x is all of ℝ.
