Workers accept the idea that hard work is its own reward, an idea that mainly serves the owners. What did Marx call this?

1. Marx asked why the working class did not simply rise up. 2. Part of his answer was that workers hold beliefs that are not in their own interest. 3. That condition is false consciousness. 4. The ideas involved, such as competition over cooperation, plainly benefit the owners of industry. 5. Workers are then less likely to question their place in society. 6. Class consciousness is the cure, not the disease: it is awareness of one's own rank in society. 7.
