Which plot gives a straight line for a simple second order reaction?
Aln[A] plotted against time
B1/[A] plotted against time
C[A] plotted against time
Dln(1/[A]) plotted against t
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 1/[A] plotted against time
1. The second order integrated law is 1/[A] = kt + 1/[A]0.
2. That has the shape y = mx + b with 1/[A] as y and time as x.
3. So a plot of 1/[A] against time is straight, with slope equal to k itself.
4. Note the slope is positive here, unlike the first order and zero order plots where k equals minus the slope.
