With [O3] held fixed, doubling [NO] doubles the rate and tripling [NO] triples it. What is the order in NO?

AZero order in NO
BFirst order in NO
CSecond order in NO
DThird order in NO
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. First order in NO
1. Compare the pair of trials in which [O3] is the same, so only [NO] varies. 2. The concentration ratio is 2 and the rate ratio is also 2, so 2 = 2^m. 3. That gives m = 1. 4. The check with a threefold change agrees, since 3 = 3^1. 5. Second order would have made the rate rise fourfold on doubling, which the data do not show. _Source: OpenStax Chemistry (CC BY 4.0), Ch 12 "Kinetics", section 12.3 Rate Laws_
