A thrombus that totally blocks flow in a small vessel is described by which term?

AA mural thrombus
BAn occlusive thrombus
CA venous embolus
DA mobile embolism
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. An occlusive thrombus
1. A thrombus is an aggregation of platelets, erythrocytes and even leukocytes trapped in fibrin strands. 2. In a large vessel it adheres to the wall and merely decreases flow, and it is then called a mural thrombus. 3. In a small vessel it may block flow completely, and it is then called an occlusive thrombus. 4. So the naming turns on vessel size and on whether flow is reduced or stopped. 5. An embolus is a fragment that has broken free and is travelling, which is a different state altogether. 6. The mural option is the trap for a candidate who recalls both terms but not which one goes with total blockage. _Source: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology (CC BY 4.0), Ch 18 "The Cardiovascular System: Blood", section 18.5 Hemostasis_
