A male patient reports a hematocrit of 47. Where does this value sit for males?
ABelow the normal range for males
BAt the mean value for males
CAbove the normal range for males
DAt the lower limit for males
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. At the mean value for males
1. Hematocrit for males ranges from 42 to 52.
2. The mean value inside that range is 47.
3. A reported value of 47 therefore sits exactly at the male mean, not at either limit.
4. It is not below the range, because the range starts at 42.
5. It is not above the range, because the range extends up to 52.
6. The lower limit is 42, so a value of 47 is well clear of it. The trap is that 47 is also the mean hematocrit reported for males in one convention and the upper end of the female range in another
so the sex has to be read off the stem.
