Who developed the first and simplest equation that improves on the ideal gas law?
AGuillaume Amontons
BEvangelista Torricelli
CJohannes van der Waals
DAmedeo Avogadro
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Johannes van der Waals
1. Several equations describe real gases better than PV = nRT does.
2. The first and simplest of them was published by the Dutch scientist Johannes van der Waals in 1879.
3. It adds two terms to the ideal gas law, one for the volume of the molecules and one for the attractions between them.
4. Torricelli invented the barometer and Avogadro linked volume to amount, so neither is connected with this correction.
