In the ideal gas equation PV = nRT, what does the symbol n stand for?
AThe pressure in atm
BThe number of moles
CThe number of atoms
DThe volume in litres
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. The number of moles
1. The ideal gas law combines the laws of Boyle, Amontons, Charles and Avogadro into one equation.
2. In PV = nRT the letter n is the number of moles of gas.
3. P is pressure, V is volume, T is the kelvin temperature and R is the gas constant.
4. Fix any four of these five terms and the equation gives you the fifth.
