A weather station reports 29.2 in. Hg. Taking 1 in. as 25.4 mm and 1 mm Hg as 1 torr, what is this pressure in torr?
A292 torr
B742 torr
C760 torr
D988 torr
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. 742 torr
1. The reading is a height of mercury in inches, so first turn inches into millimetres.
2. Use the conversion 1 in. = 25.4 mm: 29.2 in. x 25.4 mm/in. = 741.68 mm Hg.
3. Use the conversion 1 mm Hg = 1 torr, so 741.68 mm Hg = 741.68 torr.
4. Rounded to three significant figures this is 742 torr.
5. The answer 760 torr is standard atmospheric pressure, which this reading is close to but below, so it is the trap.
6. The answer 292 torr comes from dropping the inch to millimetre step altogether.
