Right hand rule 2 gives the field around a current. How are the thumb and fingers used?
AThumb along wire, fingers point at the field
BThumb along current, fingers curl with field
CThumb along field, fingers curl with current
DThumb along force, fingers curl with field
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. Thumb along current, fingers curl with field
1. The field around a long straight wire runs in circular loops about the wire.
2. Right hand rule 2 fixes which way round those loops go.
3. Point the thumb of the right hand along the current, and the fingers curl along the field loops.
4. The rule is valid for any current segment, not only for a straight wire.
5. Right hand rule 1, with the thumb on velocity or current, is the separate rule for magnetic force.
