A motor coil coasts past the position of zero torque and nothing else is changed. What does the torque then do?
AIt stays in one direction
BIt grows without any limit
CIt stays at zero from then on
DIt reverses its direction
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: D. It reverses its direction
1. Past the zero-torque position the angle theta changes sign, and so does sin(theta).
2. The torque therefore reverses its direction once the coil rotates past that point.
3. A reversed torque pulls the coil back toward the same equilibrium position.
4. Left alone, the coil would simply oscillate back and forth instead of turning.
5. This is exactly the problem that a motor has to solve to keep spinning one way.
