Right hand rule 1 is applied to a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field. Where does the thumb point?
AAlong the force on the wire
BAlong the length of the magnet
CAlong the current in the wire
DAlong the magnetic field lines
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Along the current in the wire
1. For a single charge, the thumb of right hand rule 1 points along the velocity.
2. In a wire, the drifting charges move along the current, so the thumb points along the current I.
3. The fingers then point along the magnetic field B.
4. A perpendicular to the palm gives the direction of the force on the wire.
5. Putting the thumb along the force reverses the rule and gives the wrong answer.
