When an electric current flows through a copper sulphate solution between two copper electrodes, you will observe that:

ABoth copper plates become heavier
BBoth copper plates dissolve
CCopper from the solution is deposited on one electrode while copper from the other electrode dissolves into the solution
DThe solution becomes pure water
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Copper from the solution is deposited on one electrode while copper from the other electrode dissolves into the solution
This is Activity 11.7 (the classic electroplating demonstration). Copper ions in solution move to the cathode (negative electrode) and are deposited there as metallic copper. At the anode (positive electrode), copper atoms dissolve and replace the ions in solution. Net effect: copper is transferred from one plate to the other while the solution stays roughly the same colour.
