During the oxidation of ethanol to ethanoic acid by acidified potassium dichromate, what colour change is observed?
AGreen to orange
BOrange to green
CColourless to pink
DYellow to brown
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. Orange to green
1. Acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ oxidises ethanol to ethanoic acid.
2. As it acts, the dichromate ion is reduced and changes colour.
3. The orange colour of K₂Cr₂O₇ turns green; it does not go the reverse way or to pink or brown.
4. Hence the change is orange to green.
