When water is heated, dissolved oxygen escapes as bubbles before boiling. What does this observation show about the solubility of gases in a liquid?
AIt decreases as temperature rises
BIt increases as temperature rises
CIt is unaffected by temperature
DIt depends only on pressure changes
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. It decreases as temperature rises
1. As water is heated, the dissolved oxygen leaves the water as bubbles.
2. Less gas staying dissolved at higher temperature means solubility of the gas has fallen.
3. So the solubility of a gas in a liquid decreases with increasing temperature; it does not increase.
4. This is why aquatic animals thrive more in cold water, which holds more dissolved oxygen.
