Worked practice questions

**Adiabatic ratio** $\gamma$ of a gas is defined as:

  1. $C_V/C_P$
  2. $C_P/C_V$
  3. $C_P + C_V$
  4. $C_P - C_V$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $C_P/C_V$

$\gamma = C_P/C_V$. For monatomic gas $\gamma = 5/3$ for diatomic (rigid) $\gamma = 7/5$ for polyatomic ~4/3. Used in adiabatic processes $PV^\gamma = $ const.

For a **rigid diatomic** ideal gas, $\gamma = C_P/C_V$ equals:

  1. 5/3 ≈ 1.67
  2. 7/5 = 1.4
  3. 9/7 ≈ 1.29
  4. 4/3 ≈ 1.33
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 7/5 = 1.4

**Rigid diatomic:** 5 DOF. $C_V = (5/2)R, C_P = (7/2)R$ ⇒ $\gamma = 7/5 = 1.4$. (Standard value used in air-related adiabatic calculations.)
